About “Hubli Campions”

Welcome to “HUBLI CHAMPIONS”. It is one of the several initiatives of “Deshpande Foundation”, Hubli. This is a forum of a group of people, brought together by Foundation and consists of professionals from all walks of life, who are highly motivated and enthusiastic to pitch in some remarkable changes, in order to change the face of Hubli. “Hubli Champion” program is run for a span of six months, with activities scheduled for one Sunday of each month. The first batch of champions flagged off on 29th May 2009.

KIRAN MAGAVI

Kiran Magavi

Kiran is an Assistant Professor and aspires to be an academician par excellence developing and improving her skills through continuous learning and interaction. To nurture students in a competent manner to enable them to be contributing members of society. She believes to make an impact through “provocative participation” and in her opinion, there is a need for result oriented leadership in the city, to bring some major changes. She has served as a faculty in many academic institutions and conducted several workshops both to students and teachers.

DR. CHETAN JAYChetan JaydeADE

Chetan is a Dentist. He intends to make a collective effort, to tackle some of the crucial issues, by joining hands with likeminded youth in Hubli- Dharwad. He believes that the collective energy of positive youth itself could be a “big force” to bring about a change. He is a recipient of many awards and honors. He has several international paper presentations to his credit. And has been a guest faculty to many institutions. Currently he is also a faculty at Sibar Dental College, Guntur.

ANAND HIREMATH

Anand Hiremath Anand is an Associate Project Engineer. He has qualified for UPSC (mains) in 2006. His work experience has enhanced his organizational and analytical skills. One of his long term goals is to contribute to the society and work on sensitive and social issues. He wants to gain first hand knowledge from experienced people working at the grass root level which would in turn help him to assess social problems and come up with effective solutions, that could be implemented.

ARVIND IRKAL

Arvind Irkal

Arvind is currently a Proprietor at SAN Enterprises. He views our education as mere test to the memory. He says that there is a need for everyone to upgrade their knowledge , inorder to cope with the changing world and handle everyday challenges. He has an aim to generate 200 self employement opportunities by the year end. he is of the belief that one of the core aspects of develpoment includes human resource develpoment.

KARTHIK SHETTY

Karthik ShettyKarthik is a CA and has a sound background in finance. He is of the opinion that due to lack of good industries, Hubli is loosing its local talent to bigger cities like Bangalore. but he believes that with the right combination of talent, infrastructure and governmental interventions, Hubli could take the big leap and thus make Hubli the next destination for all future undertakings.

MR. &MRS. BHUSHAN JAYADEMR.&MRS. BHUSHAN JAYADE

Bhushan and Gauri are Dentists. They believe to make the best use of the available resources and knowledge so as to bring a social change in this region. They both want to actively involve in creating awareness in health sector as well as share their experiences, regarding the same. They also want to try and minimise the social disparities. They are of the opinion that an interaction with people from varied sector wuld broden their horizons in solving the social problems.

DEEPALI GOTADKE

Deepali GotadkeDeepali is a Proprietor. She has taught at several institutions and is the pioneer in developing North Karnatak`s first e-commerce site. She has facilitated many firms to manage their accounts, billing and other management processes as well. Apart from this, she has designed and developed over 200 sites since 2001, including the prestigious sites of HDMC, Hubli-Dharwad police. NWKRTC to name a few. She plays a key role in promoting the traditional art of “Ksauti” online. This has enhanced the employment opportunity in this region. She intend to contribute in the area of web related activities, especially in areas of e-commerce and e-promotions.

Suchitra B.

Suchitra is a Facilitator. She wants to be an active contributor to the society, especially as an educationlist. She says that, since Hubli-Dharwad is an educational hub in North Karnataka, there is a need to bring new methodology in teaching the young minds, which would bring a difference in the future society.

Sasisekar Sasi Sekar is an Executive Director. He has an intention to understand Hubli in depth, as well as manage and plan the activities. He believes that people here have a different mindset and it would be exciting to work in this region.

Hemal Desai

Hemal is a General Manager. He wants to make a difference, how ever small, but a significant one. And engage himself in group activities, inorder to bring about a change to all the people of this region. He feels that the greatest challenge is the absence of general awareness and lack of civic sense among common people.

DAMODAR CHARATE

DamodarDamodar is a Design Engineer. He intends to enhance his leadership qualities and improve the process in which the social activities are undertaken, especially at the “Sankalp Social Trust”, which is working towards a healthy and green Hubli. According to him, the greatest challenge that ubli is facing today is the lack of awareness amongst the people. He believes that, by gaining knowledge from experts and sharing ideas, he can implement different alternatives at the grass root level. Also he can act as a catalyst and encourage other people to join hands to make Hubli a better place.

DHIREN THAKKAR

Dhiren is a company`s Director. He has 18 years of work experience and believes that this would help in contributing to uplift the set backs of the region. He says that the current biggest challenge is the lack of infrastructure. He has wide range of interests, right from reading and trekking, to food and rubber processing industries.

DR. AGNIHOTRI BHATDR. AGNIHOTRI

Agnihotri is a Doctor. He says that due to poverty, illiteracy and improper working patterns, till today there are huge disparities between the rich and poor. But he strongly believes that if there is proper training and guidelines given to develop the skills of the underprivileged people, then they could improve their livelihoods and also be gainfully employed.

PALLAVI HURALIKOPPI

Pallavi is a Proprietor. She joined “HUbli Champions” to understand the real problems faced by the people in this region, and try to bring out amicable solutions for the same.

Also this gives her an opportunity to know the positives and negatives her city well. She feels that the major challenge for the city`s progress is the lack of political support in highlighting “Hubli-Dharwad” region. This could attract larger companies to move there and boost employment opportunities.

MEDHA PAWAR

Medha Pawar

Medha is a Lawyer. She is interested in contributing in the legal area, in whatever way possible. According to her the biggest challenge in this region is the state of infrastructure, especially the congested roads. She also wishes to make people aware of the “Techno-Crimes” such as cyber crimes, which indeed is looming over this region.

Vinayak Bhat

Vinayak is a journalist at a leading newspaper “Prajawani” . He has dealt writing on many issues that have a correlation with politics and developmental sector. He intends to get a greater level of exposure regarding developmental issues, so as to get an edge over others and achieve a sense of satisfaction by writing on such social issues and sensitize people on the same. He believes that Hubli is a fast growing city and people need to equip themselves to match this pace.

Mohan R.

Agni is Founder and Managing Director of a private investigating company. He has almost two decades of experience in his domain field. He intenda to make people aware about the internal security and intelligence management. He believes that there is a tremendous opportunity for career in priguarding and intelligence industry in the city.

SECOND MONTH ACTIVITIES

“Hubli Champions” have galloped into their second month, since its inception. And in their second month, the agenda for their activity was Health. The Champions gathered in the early hours of the 26th July, 2009 at the Deshpande Foundation’s premises. An introductory note was delivered by the Director of DCSE, Mr. Naveen Jha. During this session, Naveen talked on public health and  introduced the concept of Medical Entrepreneurship and explained two models on the same. This was followed by a discussion.

After the introductory note, site visits were arranged for the “Hubli Champions”.  They visited three sites, which are NGO partners of the Deshpande Foundation, and are work exclusively on Health aspects.

  1. Bhageerath: The team of “Hubli Champions” went to a village called Shivhalli to study the works done by Bhageerath NGO. Here they saw that a bio-gas unit has been set up, which runs the kitchen waste from Anganwadis. Apart from this, the Champions made a through study on the Eco-Sanitation Toilets, constructed in this village. And other steps taken by the Panchayat towards the better health of their village. Looking at the extensive work done by the Shivhalli Panchayat, they are going to be awarded the “Nirmal Grama Puraskar

2. Toxics Link:

The “Hubli Champions” visited Navanagar’s Hospital. Navnagar is a locality in Hubli. Also they visited Dharwad Hospital. And under the guidance of “Toxics Link”, they observed how to the hospital waste is managed. To know more on the activities of “Toxics Link,”

3. Visit to KHPT: The “Hubli Champions” team visited the KHPT office and learned about the different HIV/AIDS related awareness programs, their different approaches to educate the masses. One such approach is “Peer Education Model” of spreading HIV/AIDS related awareness. To know more about the activities of Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT)

After the site visits,  the members joined back at the Deshpande Foundation’s premises and debriefed on the visits made. Following this, interactive sessions were engaged by the invited resource persons. Mr. Ravindra from Grama Shikshana Foundation, talked on oral health and ill effect of smoking and chewing of tobacco. Followed by this, Dr. Gajanan from KHPT discussed on different aspects of HIV/AIDS awareness. Both the resource persons addressed to the doubts and queries asked by the “Hubli Champions” in detail.

Apart from this, the activities done by the members in the previous month, where in the agenda was Education were discussed. It was brought to light that the Champions have organized their resources and contributed books to the Akshara Foundation.

Thus another month has rolled by in the calender of events of “Hubli Champions”.

The “Hubli Champions” were on their first visit on 13th June 2009. It was an early morning excursion to the “Akshaya Patra” Akshaya Patra is a mid-day meal program. An initiative which is run in collaboration of Public-Private Partnership. We learnt that the kitchen here in Hubli, is one of the largest of the kitchens run by the “Akshaya Patra”. It is from this single kitchen, that today they are able to feed well cooked, hygiene and healthy food to almost one and half lakh school children everyday!!! in Hubli-Dharwad region. The standards maintained here are of international level. It was amazing to see the effort and dedication put into the task to reach out in such large numbers. The staff begins cooking as early as 5 am everyday and right from storing the grains to the point of consumption, all the steps are monitored and every small detail is double checked. Through the efforts of many people, spread across the world, today millions of children are assured at least one square meal in India. Then the group was broken into two. Children getting Vaccinated

Akshara Foundation in Hubli is actively involved in providing elementary education to mainly  the school dropouts.  It encourages every child`s education. Their motto is “Every Child In School And Learning Well”.  They have made provision for libraries and computers in the slum areas of Hubli and Dharwad. This motivates the children dwelling in these slum areas to learn to read and write. They also have accelerated learning programs, which help the child to bridge the gap accordingly before he or she is admitted to any school. “Agastya Foundation” works for the grassroots education. It has it`s mobile lab set up currently at the  “Indira Gandhi Glass House”, Hubli. This is a very unique science lab, where in many of the school level science experiments are conducted with utmost ease. The lab is so well designed, that it facilitates children to visualise the solar system and phenomenons like eclipse  in a more practical and fun way."Solar System" Agastya`s Lab

Apart from this, there are many more interesting and fun ways of learning science in Agastya`s mobile lab.
